The town of Korcula is
located on the north-east part of the island of Korčula. In the
fourth century before Christ the Greek invaders gave it the name
of Korkyra Melania while the Romans called it Korkyra Nigra. The
town is surrounded by towers and old ramparts which emphasize the
strategic role of the town. It really resembles a fortress when
looked at from a distance.
Due to its historical and cultural characteristics Korcula has always had a particular importance as an administrative and religions center of the island. Korcula has always been one of the most conspicuous historical towns of Croatia. The facades of the houses in the red part of the town are distinguished by various coats of arms of the Korcula noblemen, bishops and dukes; this feature makes the town very special. The town of Korcula was built by the Korcula masters out of a very special kind of stone from Vrnik and Korčula. In the past the inhabitants of Korčula were engaged in stone -cutting and shipping. They made Korčula famous all over the world.
The famous seaman of the 13th century closely connected to Korčula is Marko
Polo. Actually, in 1298 the Venetian and the Genovese fleet started a sea-battle near the island of Korcula. On that occasion Marko Polo fighting for the Venetians was taken as a prisoner.
Nowadays, Korcula is well-know for its knight’s game called Moreška in which the white and the black king, Osman and Moro are fighting to gain love of the girl called ‘’bula’’. This military, dance has been danced for centuries now.
