This is the area of extreme beauty and aesthetic
value: it includes more eco – systems that have been preserved or
somewhat changed, and the area along the Krka river. Krka springs
at the north-east some three kilometers far from Knin. The river
flows through a deep and picturesque 75 kilometer long canyon making
noisy waterfalls – Krčić, Risnjak, Milacka, Roški slap (26) and
the famous Skradinski buk which is the biggest lime-stone barrier
in Europe.
The lower part of the river flows through the lake of Prokljan and then the river pours into the bay of Šibenik. The most important monuments of great historical and cultural value within the park are: the Franciscan monastery situated on the island of Visovac and the monastery of Krka. Skradin is the most picturesque place in the region; it’s been preserved and protected as the monuments of culture.
Visovac
This little island is located in the largest part of the Krka where its green waters penetrate into the rocky landscape and make a harmonious synthesis of natural and historical treasures. Surrounded by the rocky terrace of Miljevci and a very beautiful field of Rupe Visovac has resisted the storms of historical misfortunes for ages.
It was due to their hand work for centuries that the monks transformed this
charming and irresistible sea-rock into an island full of trees, flowers of
various colours, fruit and vegetables which attracts various tourists from
all over the world.
In the documents Visovac was mentioned for the first time in the 14th century,
when Visovac was an eremite dwelling. Around 1445. the Franciscan monks started
to live there, they enlarged the island, too. They were engaged in science
and education, they built the church and the monastery there in 1576 and the
church was reconstructed in the 18th century.
