Historical background.
For the first time Sibenik was mentioned in 1066 in the document granted by the king Petar Kresimir the fourth who had stayed in the fortress of Saint Mihovil. The Venetians took domination over the town in 116 and dominated there for 24 years, then again in 1125 for 33 years. In 1167. the Hungarian – Croatian king Stjepan the fourth gave autonomy to the town. After a shorter Byzantine domination up to 1180 Sibenik was dominated over Venetians, the king Stjepan Tvrtko of Bosnia and Herzegovina and by the ’’herceg’’ Hrvoje Vukcic Hrvatinic. From 1412 to 1797. Sibenik was dominated again by Venice. Since then up to 1918 (except for the period of France occupation) it had been under domination of Austria as well as other parts of Dalmatia. At the end of the First World War the town was occupied by the Italian forces but in accordance with the provisions of the Rapal treaty in 1920. it was given back to its mother country.
Sibenik is the native town of the humanists such as Josip Sizgoric (1420 – 1509), Antun Vrancic (1504 – 1573).
