Many people call Split, the city under UNESCO's protection, the most beautiful city in the world. This eternally young city has about 300.000 inhabitants in its broader surroundings. Owing to them the city has got a warm Mediterranean nature and it has lived in its urban rhythm for 1700 years now. Split abounds in many historical and cultural monuments, one of the most famous among them is the Diocletian's palace. This is the most remarkable monument of the Roman architecture in the east coast of the Adriatic. The palace was built around 300 and its form resembles the quadrangle. Peristil is the central free space of the palace. On the last part of Peristil there's the mausoleum of the emperor Diocletian, nowadays it's the Cathedral of Saint Damjan.

Split is the historical, administrative and religious center of Croatia. According to its Roman origin Split is the imperial city while in the flight of its monuments of the Croatian origin it is the center of the Croatian history and religion. Due to its size, development, it’s industrial, educational and cultural institutions and due to its favorable geographical position split includes in itself a macro-regional community, which, on the national level, involves more that a million inhabitants. It also includes as much as this figure out of the city limits in the surrounding regions. Nowadays Split is really the metropolis of the whole south part of Croatia.
