Zadar

The town of Zadar was known in the 9th century before Christ as the settlement of Liburns ( an Illyric tribe). The main monument of Zadar is the pre-Romanic church of Sv. Donat of the 9th century and the most beautiful samples of the Romanic art in Croatia may be found in its vicinity: the cathedral of Sv. Stošija of the 13th century the church of Sv. Krsevan and the belfry of Sv. Marija of the 12th century. Zadar is also known for its impressive ramparts with the representative Part and land portals of the 16th century, the square with three wells, the square with five wells and the town guard, four saints – protectors of Zadar are present on almost all the monuments namely, Zoila, Šimun, Krševan an Stošija.

Zadar is the cultural, industrial and administrative center of the north Dalmatia. It’s the town of great spiritual and material culture having a rich tourist tradition. It’s the treasury of archeological findings from the period of Antique, middle Ages and Renaissance. Zadar is the heart of the Croatian history and science, the guardian of its literary and music tradition. The synthesis of culture and beauty makes Zadar and its surroundings the most attractive Croatian region for the tourists all over the world.

In the broade area Zadar is surrounded by 50 tourist places. The region of Zadar offers 1200 kilometers of a very picturesque seaside with 300 isles and islands, many calm and untouched coves, typical landscapes of lakes and waterfalls which could be traced in the inland districts. Every now and then visitors may face small solitary churches which, like ‘’stone guardians’’ speak themselves about the oldest culture of Croatia of the 10th and 11th century.
